During the week of April 7, Carlsbad High School’s Lancer Dancers, Xcalibur, and dance program performed their annual spring showcase on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
The 2014 Dance Extreme performances took place in the CAC and audiences watched the Lancer Dancers, Xcalibur, and the rest of the dance program perform past National dances and other pieces.
“We have two dance shows every year including the Lancer Dancer showcase in the winter and then Dance Extreme which is for the entire dance program,” senior and Lancer Dancer member Taylor Kullmann said. “During the first dance show of the year each dance class (1, 2A, 2B, 3, 4) only gets one performance, but in Dance Extreme each level gets two dances in two different styles. The purpose of Dance Extreme is really just to showcase all the talent the dance program and the dance teams have.”
Along with being a way to display the dance team’s hard work, Dance Extreme is a fundraiser for Xcalibur and the entire dance program.

“Dance Extreme helps fundraise for our trip to Nationals and it is also the last show of the year so we get to show the public our National routines that we prepared for several months,” senior and Xcalibur member Kaitlyn DiMarco said.

There were a variety of routines from all dance levels and each level contributed to the success of the show.

“The different dance classes have a bigger part in this showcase,” sophomore and dance member Kate Carter said. “Dance 2B performed a combination of three songs for hip-hop and then also a Bollywood-themed jazz routine.”

Anyone from the program could have auditioned a dance to be in the show and this required several extra hours of rehearsal.

“Every class gets two dances that are choreographed by our dance teacher and then if you wanted you could try out for other dances such as dances you make up with your friends,” Kullmann said. “We held auditions and if you made it you got into the show. It is a lot of work to do the extra dance routines but everyone gets the opportunity to do at least two.”

Dance Extreme is the last show of the year that consists of performances from the entire dance program.

“It was kind of sad to perform in Dance Extreme because I have been doing showcase for the past four years,” DiMarco said. “There was a special senior dance in the show that included all seniors from the dance program.  It was the last time that I performed alongside my team on stage so it was bitter-sweet but a great show overall.”
