Juniors Karinya Ghiara and Max DeLoach perform during the spring musical “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying”. The show was filled with great musical numbers and 60s inspired costumes and characters.

The past two weeks in April and May have been a busy time for the theater department, orchestra, and tech crew. Students performed their spring musical “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” and it was said by many to be a hit.

“Every time the final bell rang after school there was a pack of kids that go to the CAC and we rehearsed for the show happening that night,” senior Adam Gilmore said. “We gave it as much as we could to really amp the show up the best we could and have the audience get their money’s worth.”

Along with the show being a favorite for viewers, it was also the 25th anniversary of this show being performed at Carlsbad High School.

“The Aviara Oaks Middle School theatre teacher, Mrs. Emert, was in the show ‘How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying’ when she was a student at CHS,” senior Valerie Maybaum said. “So this year she was able to be in it again and have a little part for the opening night. Mrs. Stapleton, who is the Calivera theatre teacher, also performed on opening night because she was in the show in 1989 as well and Mrs. Hall was the director then too.”

The audience ranged from students, teachers, parents and even spectators who saw the production 25 years ago.

“The different dance numbers were really remarkable and I’m sure there was a lot of hard work and time put into all of the different routines for the scenes,” sophomore and audience member Katie Chase said. “I saw a group of underclassmen in the orchestra and I thought that was very impressive. The play was very well done and the cast did a wonderful job in playing their roles.”

Since the play was student-based there was a notable amount of time and effort put into it during after school hours to prepare it for each show time. This musical featured several energetic dance numbers performed alongside the orchestra.

“I was a featured dancer so we did have to stay longer at some rehearsals,” sophomore Alison Pateros said. “When our choreographer, Suzie, wants to do something she gets it done so we practiced a lot. We learned the dance in probably about forty-five minutes and we had to do it over and over to perfect it. There was definitely a lot of rehearsing put into it all as well as extra practices.”

The closing night of the play was on May 10 at 7:00 in the CAC. Students and cast members agreed that this show was a success and a great honor to perform again after 25 years.

“We have been rehearsing the play for over three months now so we are all very proud of what we have accomplished and everything that has come out of it,” Pateros said.
